Bachelor of Applied Social Science

The Bachelor of Applied Social Science is designed and developed to ensure that all graduates obtain a set of key skills and attributes to assist them in their professional and academic careers as well as their personal lives. The course provides students with a comprehensive foundation in applied social science theory and practice, integrated with personal and professional development to competently and confidently work in a variety of fields.

 Graduate attributes that are taught, practiced, and assessed throughout the course include:

Bachelor of Applied Social Science (Counselling)

The Counselling Specialisation is designed to enable students to develop new understanding and new skills in counselling and interpersonal communication. Students will study a range of counselling approaches and be continually assessed throughout the course on their ability to apply the skills and integrate their application within appropriate ethical and theoretical frameworks. Students of this specialisation will develop knowledge and skills to progress their career aspirations in the field of counselling and allied professions.

Graduate attributes that are taught, practiced, and assessed throughout the course include:

  • knowledge of the framework of counselling theory, and a foundational understanding of the major theories of counselling;
  • understanding of and the appropriate application of counselling skills in a range of contexts and circumstances;
  • understanding what constitutes ethical practice in counselling interactions;
  • the ability to effectively and appropriately apply the micro and macro skills of counselling; and
  • the ability to  recognise major transition points in human development and major forms of mental illness and know when and how to appropriately refer clients.

  • ability to assist and empower people, organisations and/or teams to achieve a desired goal or outcome through the application of key coaching theories and principles
  • ability to engage with and assess a range of clients and apply coaching interventions across the spectrum of human experience and workplace and social contexts
  • development as reflective practitioners capable of evaluating their coaching practice ethically and professionally and to recognise the role of supervision in this process

     

    Bachelor of Applied Social Science (Coaching)

    The Coaching Specialisation has been designed to ground students in the theory and practice of positive psychology, providing students with a solid foundation in coaching theory, principles, methodologies, and practices that will enhance their understanding and professional application in this emerging field.

    Bachelor of Applied Social Science (Management)

    The Management Specialisation has been designed to provide a range of subjects that contribute to developing high levels of conceptual, relational and technical competency. Graduates of this course will be capable of demonstrating conceptual, relational and technical competencies depending on their areas of interest and their innate personal abilities. They will be prepared for various levels of management as effective communicators who are capable of analysing and solving problems, who are socially aware and possess a global perspective, and who are responsible citizens and professional practitioners.
