All students enrol in a common first year containing nine core units. Students who seek a specialist degree program in either Counselling, Management or Coaching may apply to enter their chosen area of Specialisation after completing the initial five units, allowing one term for their request to be processed. To ensure industry requirements are met, there are additional entry requirements which must be satisfied in order to be accepted into the Counselling Specialisation - see Choosing a Specialisation.
Choosing a Specialisation
Students apply for their chosen specialisation after completing the initial five units. Students undertaking a specialisation are required to complete:
Coaching and Management:
Students wishing to enter the Coaching or Management Specialisations may apply as prompted when re-enrolling through my.acap or by using the Application to Transfer Course or Specialisation form available in A-Z Forms
Counselling:
Students wishing to enter the Counselling Specialisation apply using the process outlined below. The Counselling Specialisation has been accredited by the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA), enabling graduates of this course to satisfy the training component that leads towards membership of a PACFA Member Association.
Confirmed Acceptance
On Campus
When undertaking Counselling Skills 2 students can apply for Confirmed Acceptance by completing the Counselling Specialisation Form. For On Campus students this is submitted to the educator at the end of the unit, with their second assessment. The educator will assess the student’s skills against the PACFA standards and forward this to the College for consideration.
Flexible Delivery
To provide those undertaking Counselling Skills 2 by Flexible Delivery with essential hands-on skills practice, and the opportunity to have their skills observed in person, these students attend Counsellor Development Workshop 1 and lodge their application at the conclusion of the workshop. The workshop educator will assess the student’s skills against the PACFA standards and forward this to the College for consideration
Students who do not receive confirmed acceptance will be advised by the Counselling Specialisation Committee around the next steps in this process and will be allowed to reapply after the completion of Social, Legal and Ethical Issues. In this case, students will be required to resubmit the form and their answers and their educator will also complete the form. If, on the second attempt, a student does not obtain confirmed acceptance, the student will have the right of appeal. If the appeal is unsuccessful the student may complete the Bachelor of Applied Social Science without specialisation or apply for one of the other specialisations.
