Your A-Z of Essential IT Information:


 Computers on campus

Each Campus Library has computers available for student use.  Students login using their standard ACAP username and password. Wireless access is available at each campus for students who have their own laptop.

Students are encouraged to have Word 2007 (docx) or to install the Converter Pack to enable them to view Word 2007 documents.


 Email

ACAP provides all students with an ACAP email account upon initial enrolment.  The email address uses a ‘Firstname.Surname@my.acap.edu.au’ naming convention. Students may use their ACAP email address or forward this account to their personal email account.  ACAP corresponds with students through the ACAP email account.

 IT Security

ACAP takes the security of its data, IT facilities and infrastructure very seriously. All users are required to adhere to the College’s IT Policies and Guidelines. The principles of behaviour relating to the use of ACAP IT resources include:

  • respect for the law;
  • respect for other people; and
  • respect of ACAP’s mission and values

The principles of conduct of users also assume:

  • integrity;
  • diligence;
  • economy; and
  • efficiency

Your username and password is private
ACAP will NEVER ask you to supply your password using an email message - do not forward your password details via email under any circumstances. If you have responded to an email requesting your password details, please contact the IT Helpdesk immediately for assistance.

Change your password regularly
ACAP recommends you change your password every three months to help prevent hackers from guessing it. You can change your password by clicking on your name in the top right hand corner of the screen once you have logged into my.acap.

Log out of your workstation after use!
Always log out of your workstation when you are finished, or when you leave it, even if only for a few minutes. If you remain logged in, people may access your personal files. Remember, all usage is recorded against the username that is logged in.

Report any IT faults or incidents
You should contact the IT Helpdesk in the event of the following:

  • You suspect someone has breached the IT Usage policy
  • You suspect a security weakness in, or threat to, the College's IT facilities or infrastructure.
  • You believe your username has been compromised
  • You receive a suspicious or fraudulent email, e.g. an email requesting your my.acap password, or your personal information etc.


 Photocopying and Printing

Photocopying and printing is available to all students at their campus library. All photocopying and printing is chargeable, with the costs being automatically deducted from the ACAP Student Card balance as the card is swiped. Student’s can put money onto their student card at the Reload Stations situated in the library.

The following free download software programs may assist students with their studies:


 Usernames and Passwords

All ACAP students are issued with a Username and Password upon initial enrolment. Your Username will always be your student ID number. After the first time you login to your my.acap account, you will be asked to change your password.

Choosing a Strong Password:

  • Your password should be at least six characters and contain a combination of numbers, letters and uppercase letters.
  • Don't use easily obtained information such as your initials, name, birth date, user name, etc.
  • Don't use word or number patterns (abcdef, 123456)

DON'T share your Password:

  • ACAP will never contact you by phone or e-mail and request your password. Do not give your password to ANYONE claiming to be an ACAP staff member. This includes e-mail messages that ask you to click on a link to log into your account.

Change your password regularly!
To change your password, click on the ‘Change my password’ link in my.acap

If you have forgotten your password, you can retrieve it by following the link on the my.acap login page ‘Forgot your ID or password?’


 Wireless Access

Secured wireless access is available to students in all three campuses. To log in to the wireless network on campus:

Gaining Wireless Access
Find the wireless network on your laptop (depending on the campus, it is called either ACAP or Navitas) and type your username and password:

Username: acap-students\yourstudentID (e.g. acap-students\135689)
Password: insert your Password

Personal laptops
You will need a wireless card that conforms to 802.11b/g specifications. Any wi-fi compliant cards should work well with ACAP access points. You may need to install the WPA2 Windows patch and wireless card driver updates before connecting. See the minimum requirements
