What is Student Placement?

Student Placement is unpaid ‘work experience’. This is your opportunity to put the theory you are learning in class to practice within a supervised work place.

There are many elements to placement that you will need to understand before you begin your placement search. Please view the presentation below as your first step towards understanding the complexities and requirements for placement.

Why do we do Placements?

ACAP has an excellent reputation in the industry for our students being 'work ready' when they graduate. Placement gives you the opportunity to practice the theory you are learning in class in a supervised workplace and develop your skills.

ACAP counselling courses are accredited by PACFA, a peak body of professional associations for counsellors in Australia. PACFA requires Counselling students to undertake supervised work placements with professional counsellors so that you develop sound counselling experience and practice prior to graduating.

Other benefits of placement for students include:

  • Network and develop links within the placement organisation and across the industry that will be vital when it's time to search for a paid position after graduating
  • Identify, clarify and explore career options and specialisation interests - you can 'try out' the areas you think you may want to work in after graduation to confirm or change your direction
  • Experience supervision (counselling students also get to experience clinical supervision) and management in a supportive learning environment
  • Build their professional  and personal confidence
  • Develop the job search skills and tools required for securing a paid role when qualified
