Roles and Responsibilities

Who are the people involved in my placement and what are their roles?

ACAP is proud of it's reputation as a leader in flexible delivery of our academic programs. This flexibility applies to placement as well. You are the one who knows best when it will work for you to undertake your placement and what days of the week and location will fit best with your other committments in life.

Therefore, the Student Placement Department supports you with resources and ideas, a database, notification of new placements now available etc, so you can search and find the placement that best fits your needs. Other institutions impose set days and dates and organisations where you must undertake your placement regardless of your other committments. We believe flexibility is the key to a successful placement.

The Student

Most ACAP students are required to undertake a placement as part of their studies. This ensures students are 'work ready' when they graduate.

What will you be required to do?
  • Play an active role in exploring your placement options by using your own initiative with support from the Student Placement Department
  • Represent ACAP in a professional manner when liaising with placement organisations and undertaking a placement
  • Take responsibility for creating and utilising opportunities for enhancing your learning
  • Complete all ACAP placement requirements

The Placement Supervisor

The overall responsibility of the Placement Supervisor is to ensure students are exposed to appropriate learning opportunities within an environment that is supportive and challenging.

What will your Placement Supervisor do for you?
  • Participate in a pre-placement meeting with interested students to discuss available learning opportunities, and determine whether your  needs and interests can be accommodated
  • Oversee the drafting and implementation of the Student Learning and Supervision Contract
  • Establish the framework and process of assessment
  • Give regular and constructive feedback on your performance
  • Provide formal supervision at a regular meeting time
  • Participate in a Mid-Placement Review with you and your educator
  • Discuss concerns about your performance with you, and alert ACAP's Placement Department of any difficulties or concerns that may arise as early as possible
  • Assess your performance and complete the Supervisor's Report form at the completion of the placement

Supervisors provide a key part of the information that will be used to determine your competency. We also consider third party observation reports such as the Mid-Placement Review.

The ACAP Educator

The Mid placement Review Educator is ACAP's representative in assessing your placement progress.

What will your educator do for you?
  • Reply to your requests for mid-placement interviews in a timely manner
  • Conduct the mid-placement review by phone or on-site if practical at the agreed time
  • Complete the mid-placement review report and submit it to the College
  • Contact the Placement Department with any concerns about the placement
